Hand-thrown in my Brooklyn studio, this ceramic match striker jar is both a practical tool and a subtle accent piece.
Each jar features a double striking surface: the unglazed colored slip stripes carved into the body offer a textured surface for strike-anywhere matches, while a second striking surface hidden inside the lid works with regular kitchen matches.
Matches store safely inside, and the small handle — shaped from a gradient of colored clay dots — makes the lid easy to lift.
The piece balances smooth, creamy porcelain clay with the tactile texture of unglazed colored slip, adding visual interest and a satisfying feel in the hand.
Beyond matches, these small vessels can also hold toothpicks, hairpins, spices, or paper clips —simple objects that deserve a considered home.
