But before any of that, there was the board, the hill of flour, the well, and the white scoop that began it. Most often what she was making was sfoglia, fresh pasta rolled by hand, the thing every Emilian grandmother seems to know how to make. But also cake, pizza, piadina, rarely bread. His iconic Rimini Blu series—those deep turquoise textures—still echoes through the archive. Over time, Bitossi’s collaborations expanded to include some of the most inventive minds in design: Ettore Sottsass, Nathalie Du Pasquier, Arik Levy, Karim Rashid, and many more. The results are bold, humorous, sculptural, and often slightly surreal. There’s movement here, even in the strictest stripes. I also love his black-and-white striped vases—graphic, bold, almost stubborn in their rhythm. They're less about decoration and more about presence. You can feel the pencil-drawn thinking behind them. It’s part of the Memphis Milano spirit—full of asymmetry, color play, and joyful defiance of function. Seeing the sketch next to the finished work reminds me how much freedom ceramics can hold. You don’t need to start from shape. I painted stripes on thrown vessels first, then began carving them, especially on cupcake stands. Carving introduced something new: not just a visual interruption but a physical one, embedded in the clay. Something you feel in the hand as much as you see. From there, stripes moved into match strikers, where the raised texture is functional too, into rings, where vertical lines cut against the logic of a circular form, and into espresso cups. Once I tried cuerda seca, a wax-resist technique that left the stripes with a stained, almost outlined quality. I liked what it did.
